MSN Live Search Referrer SPAM

Posted 13 July 2008 in by Sam Brown -

Recently Microsoft’s Live Search has been causing some unnecessary and unwanted referrer SPAM in several of my Mint installs, this was confirmed recently by others in this Mint Forum thread.

I’m not 100% sure when it started, but I have been seeing referrers from for some strange and very generic keywords, things like “article”, “design”, and “sites”. Visiting the referring URL returned no link back to any of my sites.

There is a solution

Visiting the Advanced Preferences in Mint (/mint/?preferences&advanced) allows you to stop recording activity from specified IP ranges, I have added the following to the list (that already includes an IP range that Shaun previously identified as a problem with MSN Search):

  • 65.55.109.*
  • 65.55.110.*
  • 65.55.232.*

I have to say I would love to know how and why MSN Live Search is doing this, I have hundreds of these records across my Mint installs. If you are worried about this problem yourself be sure to keep an eye on the Most Recent Searches tab and I would definitely recommend installing Secret Crush which will help you identify the referring IP.

Do let me know if you notice this problem yourself and if your IP ranges include anything different.

A Mint Updating Spree Awaits

Posted 7 May 2008 in by Sam Brown -

Hold on tight, this is a big one! Mr Inman has released a monster update to the Peppermill that includes Mint and a bunch of his Pepper, so clear a space in your schedule and get updating.

Some Notes:

The Mint update includes changes to the default Vanilla and Chocolate styles, so this update will require not only the new app folder to uploaded but the styles folder as well.

A new command was created in v2.16. /mint/?recover will repair Pepper data that was previously said to be beyond repair.

Also be sure to remove all of your old Pepper folders from your server (peppername_old) to avoid any further issues.

Roll on automatic updating ala Till’s Sergeant Pepper! I just spent the last 45 minutes updating 10 Mint installs and 33 Pepper. :/

Sergeant Pepper (Beta)

I picked up an old suggestion and created a Pepper that updates installed and loads new Pepper.

Currently it only supports my Pepper, but we’re working on Peppermill connection.

You can download Sergeant Pepper and report issues at my site.

Quadruple Update (again)

Posted 26 March 2008 in by Sam Brown -

I’ve released updates of four of my Pepper.

First of all I released the first stable version of my Notifications Pepper.

Secondly, Locations+ now supports 64-bit architectures and if the database.dat file can not be read it doesn’t prevent Mint from tracking visits anymore.

Due to Chris Thomsons help (again), I was able to revise the infinite loop prevention and connection issue handling in import script of my Tweets Pepper. I also removed the useless foreground graphs.

The biggest changes happened in my Durations Pepper. I’ve added a sweet “Timeline” tab, which displays the average visitor durations of the last day/week/month/year. Additionally should the total visitor duration now appear in Secret Crush’s meta information.

Detailed changes can be found in the version histories on my pepper site.

I’ll now start enhancing my Downloads Pepper. If you have any suggestions, don’t hesitate to write me.
